Curriculum

  • Session 1: Tech Leader's Playbook: First Team Principles and Networking Essentials

    Cassie Young, General Partner at Primary Venture Partners, will kick off the fellowship with a taste of the insights you'll gain from the program. She'll review Patrick Lencioni’s concept of “First Team" leadership and will provide actionable guidance for how to embody FIrst Team principles in your organization (and the boardroom), as well as advice on how to avoid the dreaded "swim lane trap." Cassie will also offer a high-level overview of what venture investors care most about in today's climate. Cassie will be joined by [Speaker], for an inspiring session on the power of continually expanding your professional network as a senior leader, after which you'll put their learnings into practice within your Fellowship clusters.

  • Session 2: Tech Business Model Blueprints

    Cassie Young, General Partner at Primary, will provide an overview of the common business models (and go-to-market motions) that exist in the tech industry today, including SaaS, marketplaces, and e-commerce. You will walk away with an understanding of these business models and the top-line metrics that matter most for each.

  • Session 3: Decoding the P&L -- and Your Role Within It

    Michaela Lehr, Chief Financial Officer at ActionIQ, will walk through a typical SaaS P&L and provide a perspective on the metrics that matter most for tech businesses. This session will include interactive case studies to put your learnings into practice. Expect to walk away with a more detailed understanding of everything from cash vs. accrual accounting to gross margin and EBITDA calculations, as well as a stronger command of the metrics your Board is most likely to talk about.

  • Session 4: Achieving Healthy Growth Through Sales & Marketing

    While crushing a sales quota or exceeding pipeline goals might feel like wins on their own, those metrics can be red herrings when looked at in a vacuum. In this session, [Speaker], will deep dive into the most important metrics within the Sales & Marketing organizations and unpack how to best align those metrics to what's happening in the business at large.

  • Session 5: Driving Revenue Growth Through Customer Success

    Puja Rios, will discuss how to best position the post-sales organization to be a revenue-generating machine. Topics will include how to identify your highest-potential customers, best practices for segmenting customers to prioritize resource allocation and last but not least, tips for building and scaling a profitable services organization that ultimately yields more sales.

  • Session 6: Building Product Experiences that Maximize Growth and Retention

    Rebecca Greene, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Regal, will deep dive into the pivotal role Product leaders can play in shipping best-in-class experiences and improving customer retention. You will walk away understanding how you can leverage or lead a Product team to deliver outsized impact on your most important business growth levers.

  • Session 7: Working With Your CFO

    Isabelle Winkles, Chief Financial Officer at Braze, will walk through some of the most common points of contention between the finance and revenue or product organizations and will explain the financial “why” behind objections C-Suite leaders might hear. Topics will include billing terms, credits and discounts, early renewals, intricacies of software vs. services billings and more. You will walk away better prepared to proactively identify and mitigate common friction points between your department and your CFO and better equipped to build a fruitful working partnership with the Finance team.

  • Session 8: Board Management #1: Excelling in the Board Room

    This panel discussion will combine both investor and operator perspectives to provide tactical guidance on 1) how to best leverage your board members for support and 2) how to stand out as an executive both at your board meetings and in between them. [TBC Investor], will moderate the panel alongside fellow investors and tech startup executives.

  • Session 9: Board Management #2: Building a Board Plan

    Knowing what to include and emphasize in a board-facing operating plan sometimes feels like a black box. This session will offer an inside look into what investors are looking for in a strong plan, and you'll walk out with some guided homework for how to build plans for your own businesses. Ben Sun, Co-Founder and General Partner of Primary Venture Partners, and [TBC CEO], CEO of [TBC], will co-lead this session to ensure you walk away with a perspective that balances both the investor and operator lenses.
